Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) was recently confirmed in a horse suffering from neurological symptoms residing in NewYork state. A report from the OMAFRA is attached with further information.
Mosquitoes transmit the virus to horses. Due to the need for mosquitoes to transmit the virus the disease it is typically restricted the warmer months. At this time, horses showing neurological should be tested for EEE.
We recommend yearly vaccinations of horses for protection from EEE.

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has been notified of a confirmed case of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), caused by equine herpes virus 1 (EHV-1), in Southern Ontario. A blood sample from a horse with severe neurological signs tested positive for EHV-1 in early January. The horse was euthanized after its condition deteriorated.
