Confirmed Case of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy in Southern Ontario

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has been notified of a confirmed case of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), caused by equine herpes virus 1 (EHV-1), in Southern Ontario. A blood sample from a horse with severe neurological signs tested positive for EHV-1 in early January. The horse was euthanized after its condition deteriorated. Suspected Cases of nEHV-1 in Northern Ontario

We have been notified by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs that 3 cases of EHV-1 has been identified in Northern Ontario. This is the strain of the virus that causes neurological signs. The horses in question had just returned from a horse show near Brandon, Manitoba. Strict quarantine measures are in control to limit the potential for the virus to spread. Wisconsin animal health officials have confirmed the state's first case of West Nile Virus in a horse this year. Officials are urging horse owners to vaccinate their horses if they have not already.

The mosquito-borne disease called Eastern equine encephalitis has been diagnosed in two horses in two adjacent north central Wisconsin counties, prompting a second warning from the Wisconsin State Veterinarian. "Vaccinate your horses if you haven't already, or get boosters for those you vaccinated earlier in the year," said state veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt, DVM. "EEE has a mortality rate in excess of 90% (in horses).
