COVID-19 Update

We were informed last week that one of our employees at our Rehabilitation Farm had tested positive for COVID-19. Immediately, all employees at the facility were tested even though they did not have close contact or symptoms. Thankfully all results have been confirmed negative.

Horse Show Season

Show season is about to ramp up and we look forward to seeing and working with you and your equine athletes at the Caledon Equestrian Park again this year! We will be located at our regular location beside the farrier tent for all of the EMG shows.
We will have one of our trained veterinary technicians on site all day to assist you until our veterinarians arrive at the show. Our veterinarians will be on site from 11am until 4 pm every day and are quickly available if there is an emergency.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis Confirmed in Bruce County

On October 12, 2017, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) was notified of a confirmed case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in a horse in Bruce County.
The 12-year old unvaccinated mare with no travel history was euthanized following the sudden onset and progression of neurological signs. The horse was found down in the field, became unresponsive and was euthanized. A post-mortem examination was performed at the Animal Health Laboratory in Guelph, Ontario and

Biosecurity Update - Strangles

This spring has seen a few isolated cases of Strangles on farms on the west side of Toronto. Currently these outbreaks have been well managed and there is no evidence of spread beyond the initial cases. Strangles is not a fatal disease but causes debilitating respiratory symptoms and is highly contagious. Here is an OMAFRA biosecurity update and suggestions for prevention and management of this infectious illness.

Confirmed Case of Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo

We have received notification from OMAFRA that there has been a confirmed case of EHV-1 reported in the Waterloo region. This is a contagious disease that is can affect the nervous system of horses. Fortunately, the farm owner has quarantined their farm and there isn’t a lot of horse movement this time of the year, so the risk of other horses contracting the disease is very small. The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food (OMAF) has received reports of several cases of equine Strangles (S. equi sp. equi infection) in the Waterloo-Wellington County area. Strangles is not a reportable disease in the province of Ontario, however, it is highly contagious to horses and other equids, and outbreaks are a concern to the equine industry.

Information for Horses Returning from Florida EHV-1 Areas

Over the winter show season several cases of EHV Type 1 were diagnosed amongst horses that had been in contact with the HITS Ocala horse show facility. Biosecurity measures were quickly implemented and there was no significant spread of the disease. Quarantine of specific horse housing areas was lifted last week and many horses have begun returning home.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) was recently confirmed in a horse suffering from neurological symptoms residing in NewYork state. A report from the OMAFRA is attached with further information.
Mosquitoes transmit the virus to horses. Due to the need for mosquitoes to transmit the virus the disease it is typically restricted the warmer months. At this time, horses showing neurological should be tested for EEE.
We recommend yearly vaccinations of horses for protection from EEE.

Suspected Cases of nEHV-1 in Northern Ontario

We have been notified by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs that 3 cases of EHV-1 has been identified in Northern Ontario. This is the strain of the virus that causes neurological signs. The horses in question had just returned from a horse show near Brandon, Manitoba. Strict quarantine measures are in control to limit the potential for the virus to spread. Wisconsin animal health officials have confirmed the state's first case of West Nile Virus in a horse this year. Officials are urging horse owners to vaccinate their horses if they have not already.

The mosquito-borne disease called Eastern equine encephalitis has been diagnosed in two horses in two adjacent north central Wisconsin counties, prompting a second warning from the Wisconsin State Veterinarian.
"Vaccinate your horses if you haven't already, or get boosters for those you vaccinated earlier in the year," said state veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt, DVM. "EEE has a mortality rate in excess of 90% (in horses).
