Dr. McKee grew up in the local horse industry. As well as coaching, training horses, and competing in many disciplines, she also worked in a saddlery and apprenticed with a local farrier. She competed to advanced level in 3-day eventing throughout the United States prior to attending veterinary school.

Dr McKee graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2000, and then completed an internship at a busy equine medical and surgical referral practice in New Jersey. After another year in equine practice in Alberta, Melissa returned to Southern Ontario in 2002 and started McKee-Pownall Equine Services with her partner Dr Mike Pownall. Melissa primarily practices at the Mohawk Racetrack and Campbellville locations. Her interests include racehorse and performance horse lameness, diagnostic imaging, and MRI interpretation. Melissa also writes articles for horse magazines and is the primary contributer to the EMG “Ask The Vet” online forum. She also has served on the executive of the Ontario Association of Equine Practitioners and on the Scholarship and Student Relations Committee for the American Association of Equine Practitioners. In her spare time she enjoys cooking, attending live theatre, and exploring wines of the world.
