Read The Answer!Wolf Teeth
Topic: Dental and GastrointestinalTuesday, August 31, 2010I recently acquired a new horse who's fairly young (5) and fairly green, and have noticed that he's reluctant to accept the bit when bridling. Since he's extremely willing in every other respect, I'm wondering if this could be tooth-related?
He does still have his wolf teeth, although they don't seem sensitive (no redness or gum irritation, and he wasn't bothered by my poking or tapping them at all). Is it more likely an issue with his molars? Or could it still be the wolf teeth? If so, what should I expect to spend to have them extracted?
Read The Answer!Ulcer Relapse
Topic: Dental and GastrointestinalMonday, August 16, 2010A few years ago our retired show jumper was scoped and diagnosed with multiple ulcers. He was on Gastrogard for a month and later re-scoped and was ulcer free but we put him on Ulcer Therapy as a maintenance treatment.
He was moved in Sept. and this weekend he had a major episode. Not eating, pawing, and spent most of Sunday lying in his field. He is on pasture with round bales during the day. In at night with grain and hay and gets along well with his paddock mates.
Any help? Gastrogard is no longer an option due to job cutbacks but we would like alternative ways to keep him healthy and happy.

Read The Answer!Stomach Problems on Stall Rest
Topic: Dental and GastrointestinalThursday, July 08, 2010My horse is on stall rest due to a stitched cut on his leg. I noticed he looks a bit bloated in the flank area when I was brushing him. He's on two weeks of handwalking, antibiotics and we had to put him on Bute for a few days because he was pretty sore, a little swollen and it was hard for me to dress his wound, he didn't want me to touch it. The Bute has really helped, his leg looked better and he was happier last night.
Is there anything you can suggest I do to help with that little bit of bloating? Would less grain & more hay help to keep things moving through, or something like that?

Topic: Dental and GastrointestinalFriday, March 19, 2010My horse slipped on the barn floor and landed muzzle first on the interlocking stone. He seemed fine until I looked in his mouth and saw that his three upper front teeth were cracked. The vet was called out and gave him antibiotics but said he didn't want to file anything down just yet. On two of the teeth he has chipped away the outer enamel and the third has a vertical crack at the top about 3mm below the gum line.
This morning when I checked on him one of the teeth had completely chipped away at the bottom and there are now some sharp edges. There doesn't seem to be any swelling, but looks like bruising on the gum tissue between the teeth.
