Why Rabies Vaccine?

Topic: Other Medical Issues
Monday, August 16, 2010

My horses were vaccinated last year with Imrab. According to the Merial website, this vaccine lasts three years in sheep, but only one in horses and cows. Why is this? Also, can you tell me what the difference is between the the Imrab vaccines that are marked "TF" from the others (ie Imrab 3 and Imrab 3 TF)? With the recent move to 3 year rabies vaccines for cats and dogs, wonder why we are still doing horses yearly?

Brief Colic

Topic: Other Medical Issues
Monday, August 16, 2010

Yesterday morning, my 21 year old mare coliced, and it came on suddenly, but also the signs went away suddenly.
My dad noticed the mare laying down, covered in sweat, breathing heavily, lip turning up, and pale gums. After walking around outside for about 2min, she had a big poop, and then large amounts of diarrhea. Then she seemed fine.
Can colic go away this fast?

Bald Spot on Nose

Topic: Other Medical Issues
Tuesday, August 10, 2010

My pony has had a spot on her nose that hasn't be able to grow back for 10 years now.
We've tried everything from different products to removing her halter that was rubbing her nose when she gets turned out.
Do you know if there are any products that will grow back the follicles? I am going to keep trying Vitamin E but if that doesn't work, is there anything else I can use?

Scar on the Eye

I have bought a horse with an eye injury. He is 3 and they tell me he has had this since he was a weanling. He can see but he does have a white spot about the size of the end of a pen. Is there anything that can be done at this point to clear the spot away? Is there such a thing as laser treatments?? He is a handsome fellow and it would be worth it to spend the money if the options where there.

Behaviour Change

Topic: Other Medical Issues
Monday, June 07, 2010

I have a horse that has just come back from a lease trial. While he was away his behavior completely changed, he went from being a laid back, with the occasional 'hot' day, to being very excitable, almost uncontrollable, and very stressy. Now that he is back home, he has been back almost a week. Bringing him into the barn he is a nutcase to put it mildly, he is completely stressed, wont stand still, works himself into a sweat. In addition to that he has had very soft, cow patty like manure.
He is a 7 yr old TBx gelding.
Any ideas?

Red Maple Leaves

Topic: Other Medical Issues
Wednesday, January 06, 2010

We are moving to a new farm that is surrounded by bush. We have cut down trees overhanging the paddocks but unless we completely clear the bush there are maples and oaks throughout. My question is, I read where wilted leaves from branches seem to be listed as poisonous, but there are really no definitive answers about stray leaves that have just fallen off. There are not a whole lot of leaves in the paddock but there are some. How concerned do I need to be?
