My gelding has developed windpuffs in both his hind legs and though he is still sound, I wonder if there is anything we can be doing to treat these to avoid them getting any worse, or anything we should be cautious about?

Cresty Neck=Laminitis ?

Topic: Lameness
Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Hi.We have a 6 yr old haflinger/appy.She has started to crest. Her feet are not hot and she is not lame. The farm where I board says the neck is a sign of founder. The horses are on pasture only for the summer. She is currently muzzled to restrict intake of grasses and weeds. They have no hay or supplements in the summer. In winter the horses get grow & win.Is there anything I can do to prevent or stop the progression if they are right about the founder? The vet is coming next week but has too many others to look at so mine has to wait until next month to see him.My horse also needs her teeth floated. Can this be a cause as well? Her mane and tail are tinning out as well and losing the trademark haflinger fullness and sheen. We lost a horse 2 years ago to colic and are perhaps overly cautious and paranoid. There is no other pasture without grass to move her to,other than switching barns which is our next choice. Thanks for the advice.

DDFT Tear

Topic: Lameness
Wednesday, April 28, 2010

"Thermal camera showed no heat in LH flexor tendons just below curb area of hock. Evidence of old tear of DDFT as well as scarring consistant with history. No fresh tears although some edema within sheath. Recommend to start slowly back into work"
Basically the vet thought it was an old injury and was not concerned about it. This was back in August. I Started with a week of walking for half hour under saddle last week and then added 5-10 minutes of trotting this week. There is now some heat in the area. Have I gone to fast or is this a normal reaction? Should I continue with work or back off again. Horse is not lame and has been turned out daily in field since initial injury.

Fiber Sand Footing

Topic: Lameness
Sunday, April 11, 2010

I was wondering if you have seen any new types of injuries with horses exercising or jumping regularly on the new sand/fiber footing that many places are switching to. I have heard that the new footing at woodbine has resulted in injuries that are higher up the legs such as the stifle area.

Navicular in the Springtime

Topic: Lameness
Friday, March 19, 2010

I have a 10 yr old mare diagnosed with Navicular approximately 4 1/2 years ago. I have never been able to get her sound, but she is pasture sound and currently on isoxsuprine. In the spring she gets really sore. I've tried bute, but it really doesn't seem to make a difference. Is this normal that they get worse in the spring when it is damp out, and do you have any suggestions for pain management during this time? I am trying to avoid nerving her and she is quite content the rest of the year.

Lameness

Topic: Lameness
Friday, November 06, 2009

My horse has scars and a few lumps around the injury site on his cannon bone which I think are scar tissue. However I noticed that he now seems to have a "clicking sound" like you hear in arthritic older horses in the stifle area. It only happens sometimes and I noticed it yesterday while hacking in the field. Is this something to be concerned about?
