Sarcoid around the eye

Topic: Skin Problems
Friday, March 19, 2010

My horse has either a wart or sarcoid on his eye lid. It has been there since late April and in May my vet felt it was a wart and would eventually go away on its own. It is now Oct and it has grown some and developed a bit of a cauliflower look. Vet looked at it again approx 1 1/2 months ago and is not convinced it is a sarcoid. I am becoming more convinced that it is and that it is going to require treatment. It has an unfortunate placement for the use of the ointment used to treat skin cancers. I am afraid it will get into the eye ball as the growth is near the edge of the lid by his eye lashes. What would be other treatment options for this if it is a sarcoid?

Cracked Tooth

Topic: Dental and Gastrointestinal
Friday, March 19, 2010

My horse slipped on the barn floor and landed muzzle first on the interlocking stone. He seemed fine until I looked in his mouth and saw that his three upper front teeth were cracked. The vet was called out and gave him antibiotics but said he didn't want to file anything down just yet. On two of the teeth he has chipped away the outer enamel and the third has a vertical crack at the top about 3mm below the gum line.
This morning when I checked on him one of the teeth had completely chipped away at the bottom and there are now some sharp edges. There doesn't seem to be any swelling, but looks like bruising on the gum tissue between the teeth.

Navicular in the Springtime

Topic: Lameness
Friday, March 19, 2010

I have a 10 yr old mare diagnosed with Navicular approximately 4 1/2 years ago. I have never been able to get her sound, but she is pasture sound and currently on isoxsuprine. In the spring she gets really sore. I've tried bute, but it really doesn't seem to make a difference. Is this normal that they get worse in the spring when it is damp out, and do you have any suggestions for pain management during this time? I am trying to avoid nerving her and she is quite content the rest of the year.
